  • Why Anish Kapoor is banned from world's pinkest paint

I'm sharing the world's pinkest pink with everyone except Anish Kapoor. Hi Everyone, I've just released my own brand of pink paint, ‘PINK’, it's the world’s pinkest pigment. PINK is available for £3.99 from:http://www.culturehustle.com to everyone but Anish Kapoor. Artist Anish Kapoor famously acquired exclusive rights to use the world’s blackest black in his art. Developed by NanoSystems, ‘Vantablack’ is composed of a series of microscopic vertical tubes. When light strikes Vantablack, it is continually deflected between the tubes, becoming trapped. The pigment is currently the blackest substance known – so dark that it absorbs 99.96 per cent of light. Although originally developed for military and astronomic purposes, NanoSystems subsequently confirmed that Kapoor alone had been author...

  • Anish Kapoor at Hirshhorn: Demetrion Lecture

Internationally renowned sculptor Anish Kapoor creates objects and large-scale site-specific installations that challenge perception and provoke metaphysical introspection. Employing materials such as wax, raw pigment, fiberglass, stone, mirrors, and cement, his work engages fundamental dualities of life and death, darkness and light, and presence and absence. Kapoor is the recipient of numerous honors, including the 1990 Premio Duemila, awarded to the best young artist at the Venice Biennale, and the 1991 Turner Prize. He is the most recent contemporary artist to show at the Palace of Versailles, where he is displaying works throughout the gardens. His sculpture "At the Hub of Things," 1987, lends its title to the Hirshhorn’s 40th anniversary exhibition, where it is currently on view.

Although originally developed for military and astronomic purposes, NanoSystems subsequently confirmed that Kapoor alone had been authorised to use the pigment for artistic purposes. And as Jonathan Jones began when he wrote on the subject for The Guardian, “Colour is precious”. I don't think it's really very fair! We all remember kids at school who wouldn’t share their colouring pencils, but then they ended up on their own with no friends. It’s cool, Anish can have his black. But the rest of us will be playing with the rainbow! PINK is a highly reflective and rich powdered paint pigment, which repels light to effect a powerful fluorescence. I really hope to make it available to as many painters as possible. Purchasers of PINK will be required to make a legal declaration during the online checkout process though, confirming that: “you are not Anish Kapoor, you are in no way affiliated to Anish Kapoor, you are not purchasing this item on behalf of Anish Kapoor or an associate of Anish Kapoor. To the best of your knowledge, information and belief this paint will not make its way into that hands of Anish Kapoor.” If you order some from http://culturehustle.com I hope you love it. And please if you get a chance tell @anishkapoor_art to #ShareTheBlack Thank you! Stuart x

Public Art Fund Talks at The New School (http://newschool.edu/) are organized by Public Art Fund (https://publicartfund.org/) in collaboration with the Vera List Center for Art and Politics (http://veralistcenter.org/) at The New School. This program is made possible in part by ConEdison and the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, as well as by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. The New School | http://newschool.edu Among the most influential sculptors of his generation, Anish Kapoor works in a wide variety of scales and formats, and in a range of media including pigment, stone, stainless steel, resin, wax, earth, and silicone. Over four decades, he has created a remarkably inventive and resonant body of work layered with artistic, cultural, and personal associations. Kapoor is well known for his site-responsive works, marrying a Modernist sense of pure materiality with a fascination for the manipulation of form and the perception of space. He has created a number of iconic public artworks, Chicago’s Cloud Gate (2004), for example, now a striking symbol for the city. Although the forms of his work are abstract, Kapoor’s public installations have often provoked responses and debates around cultural, social, and political questions. His 2015 exhibition at the Château de Versailles set off a national debate in France when it was vandalized with anti-Semitic graffiti. Kapoor’s talk at The New School accompanies Public Art Fund’s upcoming exhibition Descension, the artist’s viscerally arresting new installation. Sited at Pier 1 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, this massive, spiraling funnel of water suggests powerful and unseen forces, at once captivating and foreboding. Kapoor’s talk will focus on his long engagement with public space, reflecting on the creative, cultural and political dimensions of his practice. Descension will be on view May 3 – September 10, 2017 in Brooklyn Bridge Park, Pier 1. Anish Kapoor (b. 1954, Bombay) lives and works in London. He studied at Hornsey College of Art (1973–77) followed by postgraduate studies at Chelsea School of Art, London (1977–78). Recent major solo exhibitions include Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Roma (MACRO), Rome (2016); Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Mexico City (2016); Château de Versailles, France (2015); The Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, Moscow (2015); Sakıp Sabancı Museum, Istanbul (2013); Martin-Gropius-Bau, Berlin (2013); Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney (2012); Le Grand Palais, Paris (2011), the Royal Academy of Arts, London (2009); The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston (2008); and Public Art Fund, New York (2006). He represented Britain at the 44th Venice Biennale (1990), for which he was awarded the Premio Duemila, and has honorary fellowships from the London Institute and Leeds University (1997), the University of Wolverhampton (1999), the Royal Institute of British Architecture (2001) and the University of Oxford (2014). His major permanent commissions include Cloud Gate (2004) for the Millennium Park in Chicago and Orbit for the London 2012 Olympic Park. In 2013 Ark Nova, the world’s first inflatable concert hall, was launched for the Lucerne Festival in Japan. He won the Turner Prize in 1991, was elected Royal Academician in 1999, awarded the Premium Imperiale in 2011 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012. Kapoor was knighted in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2013 and in February this year, won the The Genesis Prize, donating the $1 million prize to aid refugees. Location: John L. Anish Kapoor · “Today You Will Be In Paradise” at Gladstone Gallery An exhibition of recent work by the artist taking place across both of the gallery’s Chelsea locations. This two-part exhibition demonstrates Kapoor’s ongoing exploration of the formal and conceptual framework that has informed his artistic practice for over three decades, bringing together the highly engineered and more organic processes within his oeuvre. The exhibition will feature a series of reliefs and paintings composed of tumultuous layers of red and white silicone and paint, as well as one monumental earth and resin sculpture on a marble pedestal. At once intimate, imposing, and refined, Kapoor’s work dually confronts and expands conditions of matter, perception, and metaphor. “Internal Objects in Three Parts” (2013-15) is a three-panel relief in painted silicone and wax and was exhibited this year at the Rijksmuseum in “Anish Kapoor & Rembrandt.” The reliefs appear visceral and daunting, reminiscent of mangled, bloody flesh-like forms. In these heavily layered paintings, Kapoor amplifies the material associations of the red malleable wax he has explored in depth in earlier mechanized installations such as “My Red Homeland” (2003), “Svayambh” (2005), and “Shooting into the Corner” (2009). In these panels the corporeal forms seethe with raw, vertiginous, lurching effect, as shapes come into form as both contingent matter and restless proposition. In Kapoor’s syncretic practice, organic forms and materials are juxtaposed with polished, geometric sculptures that both expand and compress a viewer’s sense of space. Both minimal and heavily worked surfaces prevail, as opposing forces retain and reflect light with resounding formal and phenomenological effect. Asking that the viewer become as much aware of the sculpture’s shape and volume as his or her own bodily form is a touchstone of Kapoor’s work. Anish Kapoor was born in 1954 in Bombay, India, and has lived and worked in London since 1973. Recent major solo exhibitions of his work have been presented at the Château de Versailles, Versailles; the Jewish Museum and Tolerance Center, Moscow; Sakıp Sabancı Museum, Istanbul; Martin Gropius Bau, Berlin; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Le Grand Palais, Paris; National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi; Museo Guggenheim Bilbao, Bilbao; the Tate Modern, London; and Fondazione Prada, Milan. Kapoor received the Premio Duemila in 1990 for his British Pavilion at the 44th Venice Biennale and was awarded the Turner Prize in 1991; he was awarded a CBE in 2003 and a Knighthood in 2013 for dedication to visual arts. Anish Kapoor has continued to explore the power of pigment by transforming a room into a bright red landscape based on the unseen borders that separate the modern world. The installation, titled Destierro, is on show at the Parque de la Memoria in Argentina – marking the first time that the British artist has put on a solo exhibition in the country. The Parque de la Memoria, also known simply as Remembrance Park, was created as a memorial to the victims of the military regime that ruled Argentina from 1976 to 1983. Made up of three installations, the exhibition, also titled Destierro, explores the displacement of civilians during this period of time, as well as a type of "new geography" brought about by situations such as the refugee crisis. The title of the exhibition translates to "unearth". "Destierro can be seen as one of the major global dramas of our time," said the curator, Marcello Dantas. "This exhibition was reborn in light of our urgent times." "The real borders of today's world are no longer the ones that separate nations, as some leaders would have you see, but the borders that separate those that have some bit of ground to stand on and those that have none." You can buy Diamond Dust online here: http://www.culturehustle.com I've finally finished perfecting THE WORLD'S MOST GLITTERY GLITTER!!!! and I'm ready to share it with everyone who wants to try it out and make art out of it, well almost everyone! Anish Kapoor isn't getting any. He's still at large hoarding the world's blackest black all for himself. (The big meanie!) So I'm letting my Diamond Dust out to up the ante and keep the pressure on him to do the right thing with his black. His black may absorb 99.8% of all light and look like a black hole but this glitter reflects light like nothing else. The diamond dust I've made is the worlds most sparkly natural high-grade glitter. 99.8% clarity, cut into super-shards to reflect light at loads of angles. It's unbelievably glittery. I'm sharing the super sparkles! As long as you're not *Anish Kapoor you can grab some for 7.99 from www.culturehustle.com Hopefully Anish will see the light and #sharetheblack with the rest of us soon, before he spends the rest of his life sad and alone staring into a black hole whilst the rest of us party in glittery colour! I hope you enjoy this stuff... it's been an 8 year labour of love to get here and I'm so happy that I can share this with you all finally. Love and thanks Stuart xxx *I'm sorry you will have to sign a legal disclaimer when you get this from culturehustle.com just confirming you are not Anish Kapoor, You're not planning to share it with him or an associate of his. We really don;t want him to get hold of any!

Visitors at Versailles are shocked by Anish Kapoor’s “Dirty Corner” sculpture. The British artist has described it as the “vagina of the queen,” prompting criticism. http://www.vernissage.tv | For Monumenta 2011 in Paris / France, internationally renowned artist Anish Kapoor has created a truly monumental work called Leviathan. Kapoor created a space within the space of the Grand Palais. "Visitors will be invited to walk inside the work, to immerse themselves in color, and it will, I hope, be a contemplative and poetic experience" (Anish Kapoor). Video by Christophe Ecoffet.
